Overview of the Test Site for the California Science Test

Sample Test Page

There are two types of test tools available:

• Global Tools: These tools appear in the global menu at the top of the test page.
• Context Menu Tools: These tools are for passages and questions. To use these tools, select the context menu ().

Context Menu Tools	Instructions
Expand buttons	When the screen is divided vertically (up and down), test questions (items) can be expanded to the width of the screen. When used with the Expandable Passages tool (if Expandable Passages is not turned off by the test administrator), this tool can be used to expand either passages or questions. To expand the passage section, select the right arrow icon below the global menu. To collapse the expanded passage section, select the left arrow icon in the upper-right corner. To expand the question section, select the left arrow icon below the global menu. To collapse the expanded question section, select the right arrow icon in the upper-left corner. Expandable Item arrow icons can also be used when the screen is divided horizontally (side to side) to expand an item or collapse the expanded item . The arrow icons will be on the right side of the screen.
Mark for Review	To mark a question for review, select Mark for Review from the context menu. The marked question number shows a flap in the upper-right corner of the item number box, like this: . A flag icon appears next to the number on the test page. The Questions dropdown list shows a for the selected question.
Notepad	To make notes or comments on a question, select Notepad from the context menu. After you make a note, a pencil icon appears next to the question number on the test page. You can only access your notes for a question on that question’s test page.
Strikethrough	For selected response questions, you can cross out an answer option to focus on the options you think might be correct. There are two options for using this tool: Option A: To activate Strikethrough mode, open the context menu and select Strikethrough. Select the answer options you want to strike out. To deactivate Strikethrough mode, press the Esc key or select outside the question’s response area. Option B: Right-click an answer option and select Strikethrough.
Text-to-Speech	To listen to passages and questions, select a speak option from the context menu. In the stimuli/passage context menu, select Speak Passage [] to hear the text on the screen read aloud. In the item/question context menu, select Speak Option [] and then select one of the item responses to hear it read aloud. In the item/question context menu, select Speak Question [] to hear the question and item responses read aloud. To listen to your whole written answer to a question, select the Text-to-Speech button on the formatting toolbar above the answer. To listen to part of your written answer to a question, select the text, select the Text-to-Speech button on the toolbar, and then select a Speak option. For constructed-response items with a notepad, to listen to your notes, select the TTS button in the notepad.
Word Prediction	When this tool is on, suggested words pop up in a menu as you type a written response. You can select a word in the pop-up menu instead of typing it out. To turn this tool off, select . To turn the tool on, select .

Navigation Rules

• You cannot skip questions. You must answer all the questions on a page before you can go to the next page. You can mark a question for review and go back to it later to change the answer, if necessary.
  • Some pages contain multiple questions. You may need to use the scroll bar to view all the questions on a page.
• You can navigate to test pages by selecting the Back and Next buttons or by selecting an option from the Questions dropdown list in the upper-left corner.
• You must submit the test after you finish answering all questions.

Pause Rules

• You can pause the test at any time.
  If the test is paused for less than 20 minutes, you can review questions you already answered.
  If the test is paused for more than 20 minutes, you cannot review questions you already answered. The only exception is if you pause on a page that has at least one unanswered question.
• When you resume the test, the first page with unanswered questions appears.
• If you are idle for 30 minutes, the test automatically pauses and logs you out.
• All answers are saved immediately. You do not lose them when the test is paused.

About Print-on-Demand for the California Science Test

Science tests require you to have a print accommodation if you need to request printouts.

To send a print request to the Test Administrator, choose from the following options:

• To print a passage and all questions on the page, select Print Page in the global menu.
• To print a passage, select Print Passage in the global menu.
• To print a question, open the question’s context menu and select Print Item. After sending the print request, a printer icon appears next to the question number.

About Text-to-Speech

If you are testing with Text-to-Speech, you can listen to instructions, passages, and questions in the test. For ELA tests, some passages are not read aloud.

To listen to content with the Text-to-Speech tool:

• To listen to a passage, select a Speak option from the Text-to-Speech button beside the passage’s context menu. You can also select a portion of text to listen to, such as a word or phrase. To do this, select the text, select the Text-to-Speech button beside the passage’s context menu, and select Speak Selection.
• To listen to a question or answer options:
  • To listen only to the question, select the Text-to-Speech button beside the question’s context menu or right-click on the question. Then select Speak Question.
  • To listen only to an answer option, select Speak Option from the Text-to-Speech button beside the context menu and then select the answer option. You can also right-click on the answer option and select Speak Option.

• To listen to Text-to-Speech read aloud from anywhere in a passage or question to the end of that passage or question, right-click where you want Text-to-Speech to begin reading and select Start Speaking From Here.

• To listen to your written response to a question:
  • To listen to your full answer, select the Text-to-Speech button above the answer box.
  • To listen to part of your answer, select the part you want to hear. Then select the Text-to-Speech button above the answer box and select Speak Selection.
